Brett Merkel has been promoted to senior manager at BKD LLP downtown.

Ken Weber has joined the Matrix Cos. in Roselawn as vice president of development, Megan Oberrecht joins as front desk receptionist and Michele Kitts joins as self-insured claims associate.

Ron Allanson has joined First Financial Bank downtown as vice president and sales manager of the equipment finance group. Kelly Siedling joins the Springboro branch as a mortgage loan originator.

Gary Vidmar has been appointed assistant city manager for the Loveland.

Alan Geans has been named executive director and district vice president of the Blue Ash YMCA.

Honors and appointments

Dennis Kennedy, a partner at Dressman Benzinger LaVelle law firm in Crestview Hills, has been appointed by the governor’s office to the Kentucky Health Information Exchange Coordinating Council.

Awards

Cooperative for Education (CoEd), an Oakley-based nonprofit, has been awarded the Better World Book’s $20,000 Literacy Grant. The prize recognizes the efforts of international nonprofit organizations committed to promoting literacy in disadvantaged communities.

Metalex Manufacturing in Blue Ash has been awarded the 2009 Energy Supplier of the Year by Rolls-Royce. The award recognizes commitment to continuous improvement with a focus on performance and affordable cost.

Frederick W. Betz, a senior mechanical engineer at Pedco in Sharonville, has received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc.

Business news ‘Emerging 30′ nominations taken

FORT MITCHELL – The deadline for nominations is Aug. 13 for the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 “Emerging 30″ awards.

The event recognizes some of the region’s fastest-growing companies. This year’s event for the 30 winners will be held Oct. 27 at the Newport Syndicate.

Flavor producer expanding plant

WALTON - Lyons Magnus plans to expand its plant.

A site plan for a 60,080-square-foot addition along Richwood Road has been filed with the Boone County Planning Commission.

A producer of flavors and other items, Lyons Magnus is based in Fresno, Calif. It also has a manufacturing plant in Fresno.

Franchise offers home care services

CENTERVILLE, Ohio - Entrepreneurs Liza Burns and Kim Motter plan to open a FirstLightHome Care franchise this month at 707 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, Suite 113.

The business provides professional non-medical, in-home care to senior citizens, disabled adults and others needing assistance.

The franchise will target Northeast Cincinnati and Dayton.

Cincinnati-based FirstLight HomeCare, founded by Jeff Bevis, expects to have 12 new franchises opened around the country this year.
